Montepulciano

Montepulciano is an Italian red wine grape variety that is noted for being the primary grape behind the wines of Offida Rosso, Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Colline Teramane Rosso Conero and the wines Rosso Piceno Superiore. The grape variety is planted throughout central and southern Italy, with the most established vineyards in Abruzzo,Apulia, Latium, Marche, Molise and Umbria.  It is a permitted variety of Denominazione di Origine Controllata (better know as DOC) wines which is produced in 20 of Italy's 95 provinces. Montepulciano is rarely found in north of Italy because the grape has a tendency to ripen late, and the gentler summers of the north can leave the grapes excessively "green" by harvest time. But when fully ripened, Montepulciano can produce a deeply coloured wine, possessing moderate acidity and noticeable body with above average alcohol content.
